World Water Day 2022

On 22nd March 2022, the Department of Environmental Biology and Wildlife Sciences, Cotton University, observed World Water Day ’22 on the theme ‘Groundwater: making the invisible visible’. The event started with a welcome address conferred by Dr. Mayuri Chabukdhara, Convener and the Head of the host Department. Vice Chancellor, Cotton University, Prof. Bhabesh Ch. Goswami inaugurated the event highlighting sustainable management of groundwater resources. Prof. Diganta Kumar Das, Registrar, Cotton University shared his experience and thoughts on that day with the audience. 

In the forenoon session, a special invited talk was delivered by Prof. Sabitry Choudhury Bordoloi (Retired Professor and Scientist G), Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), Guwahati. She drew the attention of the students by starting with her talk on basic concepts of groundwater and its characteristics. She also emphasised on the usage of ‘geomembrane’ in landfill sites to reduce the extent of groundwater pollution. On the occasion, Prof. Bordoloi also presented her research work entitled ‘Impact of municipal solid waste disposal on the surface water and sediment of adjoining wetland Deepor Beel in Guwahati, Assam, India’. The talk was followed by a documentary screening highlighting the current scenario of water related challenges in few sites of Guwahati City. The forenoon session of the program ended with vote of thanks given by Dr. Leena Borah, Assistant Professor, EBWS, Cotton University. The event ended with an awareness programme in the Panbazar area.
